Timing chain stretch and ignition faults
M266Chain wear commonly at 80,000-120,000 kmA metallic rattle from the engine bay, misfiring, rough idle or occasional stalling.
The chain stretches and goes brittle, and later in life can seize. Alongside it, ignition coils, plugs and injectors are the usual causes of the misfire and rough idle these cars are known for. On the CVT Autotronic cars there is a separate and well-documented gearbox problem - loss of drive, and control unit faults - which is not an engine fault at all and should not be diagnosed as one.
