Strut top mounts and bearings

The rubber-and-bearing assembly at the very top of the strut, which carries the load into the body and lets the strut turn with the steering.

Also called top mount, strut mount, top bearing.

How you know it is this

  • A knock or clonk from the top of the wheel arch over small bumps
  • A creak or graunch when you turn the wheel at a standstill
  • Steering that feels notchy and does not self-centre smoothly

Worth knowing before you buy

  • The most common cause of a front-end knock, and much cheaper than the damper people usually suspect first.
  • Do them with the dampers. The strut has to come out for either, so doing one without the other pays the same labour twice.
  • In pairs.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
