Transfer case

The unit on the side of the gearbox on a 4MATIC car that splits drive between the front and rear axles.

Also called transfer box, VTG.

How you know it is this

  • A whine or grinding that is there in all gears
  • A shudder on tight turns, especially manoeuvring
  • Oil leaking between the gearbox and the transfer case
  • A 4MATIC fault message

Worth knowing before you buy

  • 4MATIC only.
  • It has its own oil, and it is separate from both the gearbox and the differentials. Neglecting it is the single most common reason one fails — the chain inside stretches.
  • A shudder on tight turns is the usual first sign and is often mistaken for a gearbox fault.
  • Expensive. A fluid change while it is still quiet is by far the cheapest intervention available.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number and the gearbox code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
