Driveshafts (half shafts)

The shafts from the differential out to each driven wheel.

Also called half shaft, axle shaft.

How you know it is this

  • A clicking on full lock, usually on a front-drive or 4MATIC front shaft
  • A vibration under acceleration only
  • Grease flung around the inside of a wheel arch — a split boot
  • A clunk on take-up from one corner

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Most failures are the CV joint or its boot rather than the shaft. A boot caught before the grease escapes saves the joint entirely.
  • Side-specific, and left and right are often different lengths.
  • 4MATIC front shafts are specific to the model and are not interchangeable with rear ones.
  • Reconditioned shafts are widely available and are a sensible option on an older car.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, which corner, and whether the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
