Parking sensors (PDC)

The ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers that measure distance to obstacles.

Also called PDC, parking sensor.

How you know it is this

  • A continuous tone as soon as reverse is selected
  • One zone of the display permanently showing an obstacle
  • The system disabling itself with a fault message
  • Sensors working intermittently after rain or a wash

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A CONSTANT TONE USUALLY MEANS ONE FAILED SENSOR, and the display normally shows which zone. Only that one needs replacing.
  • They must be painted to the car's colour, and paint that is too thick deadens them — that is a genuine cause of failure after bumper repairs.
  • Dirt, sand and a car wash can block them temporarily. Clean them before ordering anything.
  • Usually need coding, and the retaining rings in the bumper are separate parts.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, the paint code, and which zone. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
