Coolant hoses — upper and lower

The large hoses carrying coolant between the engine and the radiator.

Also called top hose, bottom hose, radiator hoses.

How you know it is this

  • A hose that feels soft, spongy or oily when squeezed cold
  • Swelling or ballooning near a clamp
  • Cracks at the bends when the hose is flexed
  • Steam or a sudden total coolant loss

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A hose fails all at once, not gradually. The engine loses its coolant in seconds and overheats within a minute or two.
  • Squeeze them cold at every service. A healthy hose is firm and springs back; a failing one feels soft or gritty.
  • Heat ages them faster than mileage, which is exactly the wrong way round for a car that does short trips here.
  • Replace the clamps with them — an old spring clamp has lost tension.

What we need to quote it. The engine code, and which hose. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
