Sump (oil pan) and gasket

The pan under the engine holding the oil, and its gasket.

How you know it is this

  • Oil pooling under the centre of the car
  • A dented or split sump after a speed bump or a kerb
  • A stripped sump plug thread

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Many Mercedes sumps are aluminium and sealed with liquid gasket, not a paper one. Surface preparation decides whether it leaks again.
  • On a lot of cars the subframe has to come down to remove the sump, which is most of the cost.
  • A stripped plug thread can usually be repaired with an insert for far less than a sump.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
