Mass airflow (MAF) sensor

The sensor measuring how much air is actually entering the engine, so the right amount of fuel can be added.

Also called MAF, air mass meter, HFM.

How you know it is this

  • Hesitation and flat spots under acceleration
  • Heavy fuel consumption
  • Limp mode, sometimes clearing when the sensor is unplugged
  • Black smoke on a diesel

Worth knowing before you buy

  • If the car runs better with the sensor unplugged, the sensor is lying. That is a free diagnostic and it is very reliable.
  • An oiled aftermarket air filter contaminates the sensing element. It is a common cause and not covered by anyone.
  • Cleaning with the correct solvent sometimes restores it. Nothing else should touch the element.
  • Check for intake leaks after the sensor before replacing it — an unmetered leak produces the same symptoms.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
