Also called AC pump, compressor.
How you know it is this
- Air that never gets properly cold
- A grinding, rattling or squealing that appears when the air conditioning is switched on
- The clutch not engaging at all
- A seized compressor that has thrown or shredded the accessory belt
- Metal particles found in the system
Worth knowing before you buy
- IF THE COMPRESSOR HAS FAILED INTERNALLY, THE WHOLE SYSTEM MUST BE FLUSHED and the drier and expansion valve replaced. Metal debris travels everywhere, and fitting a new compressor to a contaminated circuit destroys it in weeks. Anyone quoting a compressor alone after a mechanical failure is quoting you a second compressor later.
- Very often the clutch or the control valve rather than the compressor, and both are far cheaper.
- The compressor is lubricated by oil carried in the refrigerant. Running a system that is low on gas is what kills compressors here.
- The correct quantity and type of oil must go in with it. Too much is as damaging as too little.
- Variable-displacement compressors have no visible clutch and are controlled electrically — a different diagnosis entirely.
What we need to quote it. The engine code and the chassis number, and whether the system has been flushed. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
