Swirl flap actuator and linkage

The flaps inside a diesel inlet manifold that swirl the incoming air at low revs, with the motor and linkage that move them.

Also called swirl flaps, intake flap motor.

How you know it is this

  • A fault code for intake manifold runner or swirl flap position
  • Limp mode, or a noticeable loss of power
  • A rattle from the manifold
  • Black smoke and rough running at low revs

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A well-known weak point on Mercedes diesels. The linkage wears at its ball joints and the actuator loses position.
  • The real risk is a flap breaking off and going into a cylinder. That is an engine, not a manifold.
  • The actuator and the linkage are often available separately from the manifold, which is much cheaper — worth asking before ordering the whole thing.
  • Carbon is what jams them, so cleaning is part of any proper repair.

What we need to quote it. The engine code and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
