Fuel tank

The tank itself, usually plastic on modern cars and steel on older ones and the vans.

How you know it is this

  • A smell of fuel, strongest after filling
  • Fuel on the ground under the rear of the car
  • Damage after grounding the car or a rear impact
  • A fuel gauge that has stopped reading — though that is usually the sender inside

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A tank is rarely the fault. The sender, the pump, the filler neck and the breather lines account for almost everything blamed on it.
  • Plastic tanks cannot be repaired reliably. Steel ones sometimes can.
  • The tank has to be drained and dropped, so the labour is significant whatever the part costs.
  • 4MATIC and long-wheelbase cars often have a differently shaped tank.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and whether the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
