Cylinder head gasket

The gasket sealing the head to the block, keeping combustion pressure in and oil and coolant apart.

Also called HG, head gasket.

How you know it is this

  • White smoke from the exhaust that does not clear once warm
  • Bubbles in the expansion tank, or coolant pushing out of it
  • Coolant disappearing with nothing on the ground
  • Oil and coolant mixed — a creamy film under the oil cap

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Almost always the result of overheating. Fix the cooling fault first or the new gasket fails too.
  • The head must be checked for flatness while it is off. Fitting a new gasket to a warped head is wasted money.
  • Head bolts are stretch bolts and must be new.
  • Quote the gasket set, the bolts and the skim together — they are one job, not three.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
