Earth straps and battery cables

The heavy cables from the battery to the starter and the body, and the earth straps bonding engine, body and gearbox together.

Also called ground strap, battery lead.

How you know it is this

  • Slow cranking with a battery and starter that both test good
  • Several unrelated electrical faults at once
  • Lights dimming heavily when the starter is operated
  • A corroded, green or frayed strap visible in the engine bay

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A BAD EARTH IS THE MOST UNDER-DIAGNOSED FAULT ON A CAR. It produces the exact symptoms of a failed starter, a flat battery or a dying alternator, and it costs a fraction of any of them.
  • Voltage drop testing across each strap finds it in minutes and needs nothing more than a multimeter.
  • The engine-to-body strap corrodes where it is exposed. Clean the mating faces as well as replacing the strap, or the new one does no better.
  • Always check these before buying a starter.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
