EGR valve and cooler

The valve recirculating a measured amount of exhaust back into the inlet to lower combustion temperature, with the cooler that chills it on the way.

Also called EGR, exhaust gas recirculation.

How you know it is this

  • Rough idle, hesitation and black smoke on a diesel
  • An EGR flow or position fault code
  • Limp mode
  • Coolant loss with white smoke on a diesel — that is the EGR cooler, not the head gasket

Worth knowing before you buy

  • They clog with a mixture of soot and oil mist. Cleaning frequently restores one that is jammed rather than failed, and costs a fraction.
  • An EGR COOLER THAT CRACKS PUTS COOLANT INTO THE EXHAUST. White smoke and coolant loss on a diesel points here at least as often as at a head gasket, and it is far cheaper — worth checking before any head work.
  • Blanking it off is not legal for a road car and puts a permanent fault on the dash.
  • Short journeys and a clogging inlet go together. The manifold is usually sooted too.

What we need to quote it. The engine code and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
