Flywheel and ring gear

The heavy disc on the back of the crankshaft that smooths the firing pulses, carries the starter ring gear, and on a manual car provides the clutch face.

Also called dual mass flywheel, DMF, flexplate.

How you know it is this

  • A rattle at idle that stops when the clutch is pressed
  • Judder pulling away
  • A grinding or whirring from the starter — worn ring gear teeth
  • Excessive rocking play felt in the flywheel by hand

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A dual-mass flywheel is a wear item with springs inside. It is not a solid disc and it cannot be skimmed.
  • Always done with the clutch, because the gearbox is out for both.
  • An automatic uses a thin flexplate instead, which cracks rather than wears. Different part, much cheaper.
  • Solid-flywheel conversions exist and are cheaper, but they transmit more vibration into the gearbox.

What we need to quote it. The engine code, and whether the car is manual or automatic. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
