Headlight levelling motors and sensors

The motors that tilt the beam to keep it level as the car is loaded, and the suspension-mounted sensors that tell them how the car is sitting.

Also called levelling motor, beam adjuster, headlamp range control.

How you know it is this

  • A headlamp range or levelling fault message
  • Beams aiming at the sky or at the road immediately in front
  • One beam at a different height from the other
  • A fault appearing after suspension work

Worth knowing before you buy

  • The ride height sensors are shared with the suspension on air-suspension cars, so one failed sensor throws both a suspension and a lighting fault.
  • Legally required on xenon and LED cars, so a levelling fault is a test failure as well as a warning.
  • The linkage arm on the sensor snaps more often than the sensor fails, and it is sometimes available separately.
  • Needs calibrating after fitting, and after any change to ride height.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
