Brake pads — front

The friction blocks that press against the front disc. The fastest-wearing part of the braking system and the usual reason a car comes in.

Also called front pads, brake pad set.

How you know it is this

  • Squealing that stops when you brake — that is the wear indicator touching the disc
  • Grinding, which means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is on the disc
  • A brake pad warning on the dash

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Sold as an axle set — four pads, both sides. Never one wheel.
  • Most cars have a wear sensor that is consumed with the pads. Budget for a new one; the warning light will not clear otherwise.
  • Once it is grinding, the disc is usually scrap too. Cheaper to quote both together than to pay labour twice.
  • Pad compound matters in this climate. A low-dust pad that suits Europe fades sooner in summer traffic here.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
