Headlight units — bi-xenon

The bi-xenon (HID) headlamp — a gas-discharge bulb with a moving shutter that switches between dipped and main beam. Mercedes called the system ILS.

Also called xenon, HID, ILS.

How you know it is this

  • One light out, or lighting up pink or dim before failing
  • A flicker on start-up before the light settles
  • A lens cracked or crazed
  • A levelling fault message

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A xenon that has gone pink or dim is the BULB, not the unit. Bulbs are a consumable and far cheaper.
  • If a new bulb does not fix it, the ballast or igniter is next — still far cheaper than a headlamp.
  • Xenon units are legally required to have self-levelling and usually washers. Those parts come with the system and their faults show as a lighting fault.
  • Do not touch the glass of a new bulb. Skin oil creates a hot spot and shortens its life dramatically.

What we need to quote it. A photograph of the headlamp, the chassis number, and left or right. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
