Crankshaft position sensor

The sensor telling the engine exactly where the crankshaft is. Without its signal the engine cannot decide when to fire, so it will not run at all.

Also called crank sensor, CKP.

How you know it is this

  • The engine cranking normally but refusing to start
  • Cutting out without warning while driving, then restarting after a few minutes
  • A no-start that happens only when the engine is hot
  • A crankshaft position fault code

Worth knowing before you buy

  • HOT-STALL, COOL-RESTART IS THE SIGNATURE. A sensor that works cold and fails as it heats is the classic pattern and it is very recognisable.
  • It is the one sensor that stops the engine dead. Most others degrade performance; this one ends the journey.
  • Cheap, and worth carrying as a spare on an older car that has done it once.
  • Check the connector and the wiring first — heat and oil attack the plug as readily as the sensor.

What we need to quote it. The engine code and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
