Exhaust manifold and gasket

The casting collecting exhaust from each cylinder into one pipe, bolted to the head. On a turbo car the turbo bolts to it.

How you know it is this

  • A ticking on cold start that quietens as the engine warms and everything expands
  • A blowing or puffing noise that rises with revs
  • Soot marks around the joint at the head
  • A smell of exhaust in the engine bay or the cabin

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Cracked manifolds are common on older cars from repeated heat cycling, and a hairline crack only opens when cold.
  • The studs shear. Budget for stud extraction as part of the job, not as a surprise — it is often more work than the manifold itself.
  • A cold-start tick that disappears warm is the cheapest possible time to fix this. Left alone the crack grows and takes the studs with it.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
