Roof lining (headliner)

The fabric-covered board lining the roof.

How you know it is this

  • Fabric sagging away from the board, usually starting at the rear or around the sunroof
  • Staining from a water leak
  • A headlining that has come down completely

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A CLASSIC GULF FAILURE. The foam behind the fabric breaks down in heat and the fabric lets go. It happens on low-mileage cars and has nothing to do with use.
  • RETRIMMING IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE ANSWER. A new headlining board is bulky, expensive to ship and hard to get undamaged; recovering the existing board costs a fraction and lasts.
  • Staining means a water leak — usually sunroof drains. Fix that first or the new lining goes the same way.
  • The whole interior trim, pillars and grab handles come out either way, so most of the cost is labour.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and whether the car has a sunroof or panoramic roof. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
