Also called AIRMATIC strut, air strut, front air spring.
How you know it is this
- The car sitting down on one corner overnight and lifting again when it is started
- An AIRMATIC message on the dash, or the car stuck in its lowest setting
- The compressor running far longer and more often than it used to
- A hiss from the wheel arch with the car running
Worth knowing before you buy
- THIS IS THE MOST COMMON MIS-ORDER ON A MERCEDES. An air strut and a steel-spring strut are completely different parts at completely different money, and plenty of models were sold both ways within the same generation.
- Most AIRMATIC struts also have adaptive damping, so they carry an electrical plug as well as an air line. The plug is how you tell at a glance.
- A leaking air strut makes the compressor run constantly, and a compressor that runs constantly burns out. Replacing the strut and not the compressor often means replacing the compressor soon after.
- In pairs is the sensible order. The second one is usually the same age and the same rubber.
What we need to quote it. Confirm the car is AIRMATIC rather than steel, and say left or right. The chassis number settles it from the data card if you are not sure. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
