Front differential (4MATIC)

The front differential on a 4MATIC car, taking drive from the transfer case to the front wheels.

How you know it is this

  • A whine from the front that changes with speed
  • Oil leaking at the front of the car, below the sump
  • A vibration on turning

Worth knowing before you buy

  • 4MATIC only. A rear-drive car has nothing here.
  • Often integrated with or mounted through the engine sump area, which makes access awkward and the labour significant.
  • It has its own oil, separate from the gearbox and from the rear differential, and it is frequently overlooked at service.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and confirmation the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
