How you know it is this
- Hard starting when cold, easy when warm
- White smoke and rough running for the first minute from cold
- A glow plug warning light, or a fault code naming a cylinder
Worth knowing before you buy
- Always a full set. One new plug among old ones leaves the same cold-start complaint.
- They seize into the head and shear off. That turns a cheap job into an expensive extraction, and it is a real risk on a high-mileage engine — worth knowing before booking it in.
- Modern glow plugs run after starting as well, to help the after-treatment. A failed one can affect emissions and regeneration, not just starting.
- In this climate the failure often goes unnoticed for a long time, because the car rarely gets cold enough to show it.
What we need to quote it. The engine code, and how many cylinders. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
