Oil pump and drive chain

The pump that circulates oil through the engine, and the chain or gear that drives it off the crankshaft.

How you know it is this

  • An oil pressure warning at idle when hot
  • A rattle from low in the engine
  • Bearing damage with clean oil and a full sump — which points at pressure, not supply

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Low pressure is more often a worn bearing, a blocked pick-up or thin oil than the pump itself. Confirm with a mechanical gauge before buying one.
  • The pump drive chain has its own tensioner and can stretch like the timing chain.
  • The sump has to come off, and on many cars the subframe with it, so the labour is most of the cost.

What we need to quote it. The engine code, and a mechanical pressure reading if one has been taken. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
