Towbar and electrics

The towing hitch, its mounting, and the wiring and module that run the trailer lights.

How you know it is this

  • Trailer lights not working
  • A trailer detection fault
  • A retractable towbar that will not deploy or stow
  • Corrosion on the ball or the socket

Worth knowing before you buy

  • The wiring needs a dedicated module coded to the car on almost every modern Mercedes. A spliced-in kit causes lighting faults and can confuse the parking sensors.
  • The car usually has to be coded to KNOW a towbar is fitted, so that it disables the rear parking sensors and adjusts the stability programme when a trailer is connected.
  • Retractable towbars are electrically operated and are a much dearer part than a fixed one.
  • Check the car's towing capacity before buying — it varies by engine and body.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and whether you want fixed, detachable or retractable. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
