Master cylinder

The cylinder under the bonnet that turns your pedal movement into hydraulic pressure for all four brakes.

Also called brake master cylinder, BMC.

How you know it is this

  • A pedal that slowly sinks to the floor while you hold it at a standstill — the classic sign
  • A soft pedal that firms up when pumped, with no visible leak anywhere
  • Fluid level dropping with no leak at any wheel

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A sinking pedal with no external leak is almost always the master cylinder, because the fluid is bypassing internally.
  • The system has to be bled properly afterwards, and on cars with ESP that needs a diagnostic tool to cycle the pump.
  • Check the servo in front of it at the same time — fluid leaking backwards from a failed master cylinder ruins the servo.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
