How you know it is this
- A deep knock from low in the engine that worsens under load
- Low oil pressure with a knock
- Metallic glitter in the oil or on the sump plug
Worth knowing before you buy
- A big-end knock is terminal if driven on. Stop rather than drive it to the workshop.
- Shells come in undersizes to suit a reground crank. The crank has to be measured before ordering.
- Rod bolts are usually single-use.
- A spun bearing usually damages the crank journal too — quote both.
What we need to quote it. The engine code and the crankshaft journal size if it has been ground. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
