Fuel pressure regulator

The valve holding fuel at the pressure the engine expects, returning or restricting the excess.

How you know it is this

  • Hard starting, hot or cold
  • Fuel pressure that bleeds away after switch-off
  • Black smoke or heavy fuel consumption
  • A rail pressure deviation code

Worth knowing before you buy

  • On a common-rail diesel the regulator is on the pump or the rail and is often replaceable on its own, which is far cheaper than the pump.
  • Pressure dropping overnight causes hard starting the next morning only — a very recognisable pattern.
  • On older petrol cars a failed diaphragm lets fuel into the vacuum hose. Pull the hose off: if it is wet with petrol, that is your answer.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
