Also called UJ, spider joint.
How you know it is this
- A clunk on take-up
- A vibration that rises with speed
- Rust-coloured dust around the joint — the classic sign of a dry, failing UJ
- Play felt when the shaft is twisted by hand
Worth knowing before you buy
- Fine red dust around the joint is dried grease and bearing wear, and it is a reliable early sign.
- Many modern shafts have sealed, non-serviceable joints, so the shaft is replaced rather than the joint. Common on the older cars and the G-Class where it is serviceable.
- Balance matters afterwards.
What we need to quote it. The chassis number. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
