Viscous fan clutch

The temperature-sensitive coupling driving a belt-driven fan, locking up as the air through the radiator gets hotter.

Also called fan clutch, viscous coupling.

How you know it is this

  • Overheating in traffic with a fan that spins freely by hand when hot
  • A constant roar from the engine bay because the clutch has locked permanently
  • Silicone fluid thrown out around the clutch body

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Test it hot, not cold: you should feel real resistance turning the fan by hand when the engine is up to temperature.
  • A locked clutch is noisy and costs fuel; a slipping one overheats the engine. Both mean the same part.
  • Common on the older six-cylinder cars, the G-Class and the vans. Most modern cars use an electric fan instead.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
