Also called ECU, ECM, engine management.
How you know it is this
- No communication with the engine module on a diagnostic scan
- A car that will not start with no other explanation
- Multiple implausible faults at once
- Water damage or corrosion visible at the module
Worth knowing before you buy
- RARELY THE FAULT. Almost everything blamed on an ECU turns out to be a sensor, a connector, an earth or a flat battery. Confirm before ordering.
- It is matched to the car's immobiliser. A used unit from a donor car will not start your car without being programmed to it, and on some models that cannot be done at all.
- Coding and often key programming are part of the job, not extras.
- Water ingress is the common real failure — check where it is mounted before assuming electronics.
- Repair services exist for common faults and are usually far cheaper than a replacement plus programming.
What we need to quote it. The chassis number, the part number off the unit, and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
