Purge valve and charcoal canister

The system that traps fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister and feeds it into the engine to be burned.

Also called EVAP, purge valve, canister.

How you know it is this

  • A check-engine light with an evaporative system code
  • A rough idle just after starting
  • Difficulty refuelling, with the nozzle cutting out repeatedly
  • A smell of fuel around the rear of the car

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Petrol only. A diesel has no evaporative system.
  • Check the filler cap first — it is the cheapest and most common cause of an EVAP code by a wide margin.
  • A canister saturated with liquid fuel usually means someone has over-filled the tank repeatedly.
  • A purge valve stuck open gives a rough idle and a lean code; stuck shut gives a fuelling-station complaint.

What we need to quote it. The engine code and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
