ABS / ESP hydraulic unit and pump

The valve block and pump that can release and reapply the brake at each wheel independently — what actually does ABS, traction control and ESP.

Also called ABS pump, hydraulic modulator.

How you know it is this

  • ABS, ESP and often the handbrake warning all lit together
  • A loud buzzing from under the bonnet when you brake
  • A pedal that kicks back on a dry road

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Expensive, and frequently condemned when the fault was a wheel speed sensor. Get the codes read before ordering.
  • Most units must be coded to the car after fitting. A second-hand unit from a different car usually will not work without that.
  • The pump and the control module are sometimes separable and sometimes one sealed assembly, depending on the car.

What we need to quote it. The fault codes, and the part number off the unit if the car is accessible — these change several times within one generation. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
