Also called front shocks, front dampers.
How you know it is this
- The nose carrying on moving after a bump, or diving hard under braking
- Oil streaked down the body of the damper
- Uneven, scalloped wear across the front tyres
- A knock over small bumps that a new top mount does not cure
Worth knowing before you buy
- Always in pairs across the axle. One new damper against one tired one makes the car handle worse, not better.
- Check whether the car has ADS — an adaptive damper carries a solenoid and a plug, and a standard damper will bolt straight on and then light the dash.
- AMG and sports suspension use different valving and often a different part number from the standard car.
- Budget for the top mount at the same time. It is cheap, it is behind the damper, and doing it later means the same labour twice.
What we need to quote it. Whether the car is on standard, sports/AMG or ADS adaptive damping. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
