How you know it is this
- A battery warning light that comes on while driving
- Lights dimming and brightening with engine speed
- A flat battery every morning despite a new battery
- A whine or grinding from the front of the engine
- A smell of hot electrics
Worth knowing before you buy
- A battery light that comes on while driving is charging, not the battery. Replacing the battery will not fix it and the new one flattens too.
- Have the charging voltage measured at the battery with the engine running. That one reading separates alternator from battery definitively.
- Heat is what kills them here, and an alternator sitting low at the front also gets road water and dust.
- Reconditioned units are widely available and much cheaper. Worth quoting both.
- Some later cars have a water-cooled alternator or a belt-driven starter-generator, which is a different and dearer part.
What we need to quote it. The engine code, and the measured charging voltage if it has been taken. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
