How you know it is this
- A rattle from the front of the engine on a cold start
- A timing correlation fault code
- Plastic fragments found in the sump or the oil strainer
Worth knowing before you buy
- NEVER FIT A CHAIN ALONE. The tensioner and the plastic guides wear with it, and a new chain on old guides is back within a year. That is why this is sold as a kit.
- The labour is most of the cost on this job — the front of the engine comes apart, or on some engines the gearbox comes out. Doing it once with every part renewed is the cheap way.
- Kits vary in what they include. Confirm whether the sprockets, the camshaft adjusters and the cover gaskets are in yours before ordering.
- A stretched chain does not snap; it jumps a tooth, and then the valves meet the pistons. The rattle is the warning.
What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
