Propshaft (drive shaft)

The shaft running down the centre of the car from the gearbox to the rear differential.

Also called prop, propeller shaft.

How you know it is this

  • A vibration through the floor that rises with road speed regardless of gear
  • A clunk on pulling away or on lifting off
  • A rumble from under the centre of the car

Worth knowing before you buy

  • It is balanced as an assembly. Mark its orientation before removal, or it goes back out of balance.
  • Most propshaft faults are the centre bearing or the flex discs, not the shaft. Both are far cheaper — check them first.
  • A vibration that tracks ROAD speed and not engine speed points here rather than at the engine.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and whether the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
