Flex discs (giubo)

The reinforced rubber couplings at each end of the propshaft that take up driveline shock and slight misalignment.

Also called giubo, flex disc, rubber coupling, donut.

How you know it is this

  • A clunk on pulling away and on lifting off
  • Vibration under acceleration that eases when coasting
  • Visible cracks or the disc torn around a bolt hole

Worth knowing before you buy

  • A very characteristic Mercedes fault, and a cheap part. The clunk on take-up is the signature.
  • The bolts are usually single-use and the disc has a specific orientation and a special tool for compressing it.
  • Usually two — one at the gearbox and one at the differential — and they are often different parts.
  • Left alone, a failed disc puts shock into the centre bearing and the differential mounts.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number, and front or rear end of the shaft. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
