How you know it is this
- Slipping — engine revs rise without the car accelerating
- Harsh or delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse
- Limp mode locked in one gear
- Metal in the gearbox pan at a service
Worth knowing before you buy
- Before ordering one, be sure it is the gearbox. On the 722.9 in particular the conductor plate and the valve body cause symptoms that feel exactly like a failed gearbox and cost a fraction.
- Exchange units are far cheaper than new and are the normal route. Ask for both prices.
- The gearbox has to be coded to the car, and the adaptations reset, or it shifts badly with good hardware.
- Torque converter and gearbox are usually quoted together — fitting an old converter to a rebuilt box puts the old debris straight back in.
What we need to quote it. The gearbox code (722.6, 722.9 or 725.0), the chassis number, and whether the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
