How you know it is this
- Blue smoke under load and on overrun
- Oil consumption with clean plugs ruled out
- Low compression that improves when oil is put down the bore — that points at rings
- A knock under load from one cylinder
Worth knowing before you buy
- The oil-down-the-bore test separates rings from valves and costs nothing. Worth doing before buying anything.
- Pistons come in size grades. A rebored engine needs oversize pistons and the bore has to be measured first.
- Ring replacement means the engine out and the head off. On most cars the labour is worth more than the parts.
What we need to quote it. The engine code, and the bore size if the engine has been rebuilt before. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
