Valve stem seals

The small rubber seals that stop oil running down the valve stems into the combustion chamber.

How you know it is this

  • A puff of blue smoke on start-up, or after the car has idled at a junction
  • Oil consumption with no external leak and good compression
  • Oily deposits on the plugs

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Blue smoke only on start-up and overrun is the signature. Smoke all the time is more likely rings.
  • They harden with heat and age rather than mileage, so a low-mileage car in this climate is not exempt.
  • On some engines they can be done with the head in place using compressed air. That changes the cost enormously — worth asking.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
