How you know it is this
- A single loud click and nothing else
- A whirring with no engine turning — the pinion is not engaging
- Slow, laboured cranking with a battery that tests good
- Intermittent starting that is worse when the engine is hot
Worth knowing before you buy
- TEST THE BATTERY AND THE EARTH STRAPS FIRST. A flat battery and a dead starter give the same click, and one of the two costs almost nothing.
- Hot-start failure is a classic starter symptom — the windings lose resistance as they heat.
- Often the solenoid rather than the motor, and that is a much cheaper part.
- On many engines the starter is under the inlet manifold, so labour is the bigger half of the bill.
What we need to quote it. The engine code, and confirmation the battery has been tested. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
