Heater matrix (heater core)

A small radiator inside the dashboard that heats the cabin air using engine coolant.

Also called heater core, heater radiator.

How you know it is this

  • A damp or wet passenger footwell, often smelling sweet
  • Windows fogging with a greasy film that will not wipe clear
  • No heat from the vents with the engine at normal temperature
  • Coolant disappearing with nothing visible under the car

Worth knowing before you buy

  • The part is cheap and the job is not — on most cars the dashboard has to come out, which is a day or more of labour.
  • Because of that, it is worth being certain before ordering. A sweet smell with a damp carpet is the reliable sign.
  • Blockage rather than leakage is common where the coolant has been neglected. A flush sometimes restores heat without any part at all.
  • Do the heater hoses and the control valve while the system is open.

What we need to quote it. The chassis number — heater cores differ with climate control specification. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
