Transmission control module

The computer controlling the automatic gearbox — shift points, pressures and the lock-up clutch.

Also called TCU, TCM, VGS.

How you know it is this

  • Limp mode stuck in one gear
  • No communication with the transmission module
  • Harsh or random shifting
  • Gearbox fluid found inside the module or its connector

Worth knowing before you buy

  • On many Mercedes the control unit is INSIDE the gearbox, integrated with the conductor plate. That is why a control unit fault and a conductor plate are so often the same repair.
  • Gearbox fluid wicking up the loom from a failed connector sleeve is a common cause of death. Fix the sleeve or the new module goes the same way.
  • Must be coded to the car, and the adaptations reset afterwards.

What we need to quote it. The gearbox code, the chassis number, and the fault codes. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
