Also called steering gear, rack.
How you know it is this
- Fluid leaking from the rack gaiters or the pipe unions
- A knock through the wheel over bumps
- Assistance that comes and goes, or is heavier one way than the other
- A whine that tracks steering effort rather than engine speed
Worth knowing before you buy
- Hydraulic and electric racks are completely different parts. Newer cars are electric and have no pump, hoses or fluid at all.
- An electric rack usually has to be coded to the car after fitting.
- A leak at the gaiter can sometimes be an inner tie rod rather than the rack itself, which is far cheaper. Worth establishing first.
- Alignment afterwards, always.
What we need to quote it. Whether the car has hydraulic or electric power steering, and whether it is 4MATIC — the rack differs. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
