Worth knowing before you buy
- THE RATIO MUST MATCH. A differential from a similar-looking car with a different engine or gearbox is usually a different ratio, and a mismatched ratio front to rear on a 4MATIC destroys the transfer case.
- The ratio is stamped on the differential housing. Ask for a photograph of the tag.
- Ask whether the unit turns smoothly by hand and whether there is any play at the pinion. A whine in a used differential does not improve once fitted.
- A transfer case fails because its oil was never changed. A used one from a car with the same neglect is a short-term fix — ask about history.
- New seals and fresh oil whatever you buy.
What we need to quote it. The chassis number so we can match the ratio, and whether the car is 4MATIC. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
