Crank pulley / harmonic balancer

The pulley on the nose of the crankshaft that drives the accessory belt and damps the crankshaft's torsional vibration.

Also called crank pulley, vibration damper.

How you know it is this

  • A wobble visible in the pulley with the engine running
  • The rubber ring between the inner and outer parts of the pulley cracked or displaced
  • Belt squeal or a belt that will not stay aligned
  • A rumble that changes with revs but not with gear

Worth knowing before you buy

  • It is two rings bonded to rubber, not a solid pulley. When the rubber fails the outer ring moves independently and the belt alignment goes with it.
  • A failed damper puts vibration straight into the crank bearings. It is not cosmetic.
  • The centre bolt is usually single-use and very tight.

What we need to quote it. The engine code. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
