Front pipe and flexi section

The first section of pipe after the manifold or turbo, usually including a braided flexible joint that absorbs engine movement.

Also called downpipe, flexi pipe, flex joint.

How you know it is this

  • A loud blowing from under the front of the car that is worst on acceleration
  • A rattle at idle that changes when the engine rocks
  • The braid visibly broken or the mesh split
  • Exhaust fumes entering the cabin

Worth knowing before you buy

  • The flexi is a wear item. It fails from engine movement, and worn engine mounts make it fail much sooner — worth checking those at the same time.
  • Cutting out and welding in a new flexi section is common and far cheaper than a whole front pipe, where the rest of the pipe is sound.
  • On a turbo car this section may carry the first catalytic converter, which changes the price completely.

What we need to quote it. The engine code, and whether the section carries a catalytic converter. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
