Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

The filter trapping soot from a diesel exhaust, which burns the soot off periodically in a regeneration cycle.

Also called DPF, particulate filter.

How you know it is this

  • A DPF warning on the dash
  • Limp mode with a loss of power
  • A smell of burning and a cooling fan running hard after a drive — an attempted regeneration
  • Rising oil level on the dipstick, from fuel diluting the oil during failed regenerations

Worth knowing before you buy

  • SHORT JOURNEYS ARE WHAT BLOCK THESE. A regeneration needs a sustained run at temperature, and a car used only in city traffic never completes one. That is the cause, and replacing the filter without changing how the car is used means doing it again.
  • A forced regeneration or a professional clean is far cheaper than a filter and works on a filter that is blocked rather than damaged. Always price both.
  • Rising oil level means unburnt fuel is going into the sump. That is urgent — it thins the oil and the engine bearings pay for it.
  • Ash from the wrong engine oil accumulates permanently and cannot be burned off. Low-ash oil to the correct Mercedes sheet is not optional on a DPF car.
  • Removing it is not legal for a road car and will not pass a test.

What we need to quote it. The engine code, the fault codes, and whether the car does mostly short journeys. The chassis number settles the generation, the body and usually the engine in seventeen characters — it is on your mulkiya. A photograph of the old part helps where there is more than one version.
